Every Dr. Bancroft bar is made by hand, in small batches, start to finish.
We mix the oils with lye and water, pour the soap into a mold, and let it set. Once it firms up, we cut it into bars by hand and lay them out to cure for a full six weeks. That cure is what makes each bar last — hard, dense, no shortcuts.

Yes. Cold-process tallow soap is one of the gentlest cleansers you can use — there are no synthetic detergents, no fragrance oils, no preservatives. The bar leaves a small amount of natural glycerin on the skin (a byproduct of saponification) that big-soap brands strip out and sell separately. If your skin reacts to most drugstore soaps, this is usually the kind of bar that doesn't.

Four to six weeks of daily use, on average. The bar is hard-cured for six weeks before it ships, so it's dense and doesn't melt down in the shower the way fresh soap does. Keep it on a draining dish between uses (not sitting in water) and it'll last even longer.

Dr. Bancroft is real soap, made the original way: tallow, plant oils, lye, water, salt, clay, and one essential oil. Six ingredients, plus the lye and water that get consumed in the process. Most people can. It's a real soap, so it cleans thoroughly — which means if you have very dry or compromised facial skin, follow with a moisturizer. The Lavender, Cedarwood, and Lemongrass bars tend to be the most comfortable for face use. The Peppermint and Smoky Pine bars are more invigorating and better suited to body and beard.
